Island of Roatan

Coxen Hole

Coxen Hole is the largest city on Roatán, and if you’re seeking an insight into what local life on the island is really like, you’ll find it here. Despite its size, tourists tend not to stay in Coxen Hole, preferring the beachside holiday resorts in the west. However, the city still has a good range of things to do on the off chance that the weather isn’t great, including several shopping centres and the modern port of Mahogany Bay.

Parrot Tree

Since July is not part of Roatán’s tourist season, it’s an excellent time to book into one of the island’s resorts and make the most of lower prices and a quieter atmosphere. The Carambola Botanical Gardens are a vast green space where you can follow hiking trails right to the top of Carambola mountain, plunging through the jungle and spotting animals such as iguanas, parrots and native guatusa rabbits.

Take a Road Trip Around the Island

Although Roatán is a relatively small island, there are a lot of different things to see and do during a holiday, and having to take taxis or public transport constantly can be a pain. If you want more freedom with your itinerary then hiring a car is a good option, as July’s changeable weather and risk of rain means that it can be useful to have the option just to change your plans and drive somewhere new when you want.

Crowds & costs

July is one of the best times to visit Roatán if you want to make the most of the sunny weather, but also want to avoid the crowds that usually descend onto the island for the first four months of the year. It isn’t the off-season for tourism, so expect to see some other holidaymakers, but it is certainly not the most expensive time of the year to go.
