Weather in Namibia in July

Road in Namibia

July is one of the most popular months to visit Namibia because there is such a low chance of rain, providing ideal conditions for a safari. Whilst you’ll probably see a lot of sunshine during the day temperatures will be relatively cool, particularly at night, and bringing lots of layers of warm clothing is essential.

Temperature

July is in the middle of Africa’s winter season, and therefore is one of the coldest months of the year. Average temperatures depend on where you are in the country, but the highest you are likely to get during the day is around 21°C. This will drop dramatically in the evening to around 7°C, so make sure that you’ve packed warm clothes, especially if you’re staying in the desert!

Clouds and Rainfall

July is the driest month of the year in Namibia, so it’s highly unlikely that you’ll experience any rain when you visit. Skies will be clear, which contributes to the cold temperatures that the month experiences, but this means you’ll have brilliant stargazing opportunities each night if you’re staying in a national park or game reserve.

Sunshine Hours

The amount of sunshine you’ll get every day in Namibia in July does vary slightly depending on where you are in the country, but is usually between 8 and 11 hours each day because the skies are so clear. Sunrise and sunset times will also depend on your geographic position, but the sun tends to be up before 7 am and will have set before 7 pm wherever you are.

One of the largest conservation areas in Africa is the Etosha National Park, found in the north of Namibia. This is an ideal location for those wanting a holiday on a game reserve, as four of the famous Big Five safari animals can be spotted within the park along with countless other exciting species.

July is one of the best times to enjoy a safari in Africa because the dry weather means that watering holes are almost always busy, providing perfect spots to watch the different animals congregate to drink. There is a range of campsites, specialist tours and game reserve accommodation options in Etosha that make it an ideal place for a safari holiday where you’re bound to spot some of Africa’s finest wildlife.

Sossusvlei

One of Namibia’s most famous landmarks is the salt pan known as Sossusvlei, surrounded by stunning red sand dunes that rise up to 300 metres in height. This area is in the southern part of the huge Namib desert and offers a stunning range of scenery and experiences that offer a great alternative to a classic African safari.

The Namib Desert is bone dry in July, making this month one of the most dramatic times to visit the area. It’s particularly popular with photographers coming to capture the dunes, the Sesriem Canyon and the salt pan, and there is a range of different accommodation options to suit all travellers wanting to spend time in this breathtaking part of the country.

Crowds & costs

July is one of the most popular months to visit Namibia because of the dry and cool weather, so there are a fair amount of tourists coming to the country over the month which can make securing accommodation difficult. Namibia is cheaper than a lot of other African destinations but prices will still reflect the fact that it is peak tourist season. However, the country’s size means that it won’t feel crowded, which is ideal if you want a quieter holiday.
